Aleix Espargaro was without a grand prix ride at the start of the 2009 season, but by the end of the year he had secured a full time seat in MotoGP for 2010.

Espargaro’s big chance came when he was called up to replace Pramac’s Mika Kallio, who had temporarily been recruited to the factory Ducati team in place of the sick Casey Stoner.

Espargaro grabbed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with both hands, outpacing team regular Niccolo Canepa from the off and finishing 13th and then eleventh at Indianapolis and Misano.

When Canepa was injured Espargaro returned for the last two rounds, where he again finished eleventh and 13th, in the knowledge that he had been signed to ride alongside Kallio for 2010.

Aleix, the older brother of 125cc star Pol, rode in 125 and 250cc grand prix racing full time from 2005 to the end of 2008, but without a podium finish.
