CAREER

Alvaro Bautista will be the only 2010 MotoGP rookie riding for a factory team after signing to ride alongside Loris Capirossi at Rizla Suzuki. Bautista’s 250cc boss Jorge Martinez ‘Aspar’ had tried hard to retain the Spaniard for his own MotoGP project, with satellite Ducati machinery, but Suzuki is the only manufacturer exempt from the no-rookies rule and Bautista will hope having such a direct link to the factory will pay off.

Bautista arrives in the premier-class as the 2006 125cc World Championship, then having been a frontrunner in 250cc from 2007-2009. Bautista won eight races in the quarter-litre class, the same as he had in 125, but was never able to lift the title - finishing a best of second in 2008.

But competition in the class was intense, as illustrated by the fact that Bautista’s three main rivals - Hiroshi Aoyama, Marco Simoncelli and Hector Barbera - have also secured MotoGP seats for 2010.
