Indianapolis Motor Speedway was opened in 1909 and was originally paved with bricks, hence its nickname "The Brickyard". Now almost completely resurfaced, only a single line of the original bricks marks out the start finish line. The Motor Speedway is a two and a half mile (nearly rectangular) oval with four 1/4 mile turns, two 5/8 mile long straights, and two 1/8 mile straights. The GP course was built between 1998 and 2000, with additional work completed in 2008 to create the Motorcycle circuit.
