2010

Keeps team mate Kovalainen honest in qualifying, but generally less convincing in races, struggling to break into the top 15. Best result a 13th behind the Finn in Japan.

2009

Makes the most of the Toyota TF109's rather erratic performance, scoring podiums in Australia and Bahrain, and starting from pole at Sakhir. Rounds season off with a second-place finish in Japan, and goes on to sign for the new Lotus team for 2010 after Toyota's F1 withdrawal.

2008

Consistently quick, scoring in 10 of 18 races as Toyota form improves. Third place in France puts team back on podium for the first time since 2006. Finishes ninth overall with 31 points, six clear of team mate Timo Glock. Retained for 2009.

2007

Patchy third season with Toyota. Qualifying speed as impressive as usual, but TF107's race pace proves inconsistent and he scores on just four occasions, finishing the year 13th overall. Nevertheless, convincingly out-performs team mate Ralf Schumacher.

2006

Scores 28 points less than in 2005 after frustrating second season with Toyota. Finishes 12th in the standings, two places below team mate Ralf Schumacher.

2005

Superb qualifying performances - one pole plus 13 top-five grid slots. Scores Toyota's best-ever results with second places in Malaysia and Bahrain, but lacklustre form in later races drops him to seventh below team mate Ralf Schumacher in final standings.

2004

Strong first half of the season with Renault, with two poles and first victory at Monaco. However, performance drops off in the latter half and he parts company with the team with three races to go. Makes an early debut for Toyota at the last two.

2003

Five retirements, but scores points at every other race bar one, with a podium in Germany. Finishes eighth in the drivers' championship with Renault.

2002

Moves to Renault to partner Jenson Button. Scores nine points to finish the drivers' championship in eighth position.

2000

Joins the Jordan team. Finishes the championship in 10th position.

1999

Second in the European Grand Prix with Prost, his first podium finish. Finishes ninth in the drivers' championship.

1997

Makes debut with Minardi, and then transfers to Prost after Olivier Panis is injured. Finishes ninth in the drivers' championship having won three points at the German Grand Prix for his new team.

1996

Wins the German Formula Three Championship and becomes a test driver for Benetton.
